According to research, any toy can actually be educational. Any type of toy can actually stimulate learning. Toys are practice grounds for situation where similar skills are needed. What better way to introduce concept of learning to your child than through something he enjoys?

Children, by nature, are curious. They can be easily attracted and distracted by the things around them, and they quickly pick up pieces of information that adults tend to overlook. Everything around them feeds some bits of information to their young minds. Their uncluttered and inquisitive minds welcome all knowledge; some of those will either be useful or unfavorable to their learning. This vital stage in children’s growth must be complemented with proper guidance inside and outside the home, support and encouragement, proper formal education, and educational toys.

The main intention of toys is to bring joy to children but toys can be very helpful in preparing your child to learn bigger things. Toys are good instruments for educating young minds because they do not force children to learn. Instead it promote learning without the little ones realizing it, they don’t have to be confined in closed quarters, and can be replaced or added to as children grow older.

Toys are very powerful items because they been your child’s constant companion since he was still a baby. Through toys, your child discovered the fun of using his senses. As they get older toys can teach children how to count, identify colors and shapes, match small objects to their larger counterparts, complete a puzzle, draw, sing and so on. Educational toys contribute to the wealth of knowledge children get every day. The more engaging and interesting the toy is, the more time children spend playing with it.

Toys don’t not only help in developing the child’s cognitive skills but it also teaches him responsibility by assigning him a task to organize his toys. With your guidance, toys can teach him to socialize as well by asking him to share his toys with other children.

While toys are not the only tools by which children can learn, they are definitely one of the most effective and affordable means to develop young minds. It has been proven over the years that toys play a very important role in the holistic development of a child.

Child’s play should be fun and educational. There are different types of toys suited for your child’s age. Use age recommendations as a guide or something to challenge your child appropriately. It should be not too hard or too easy. Development milestones can help you discern your child’s learning stage. Hera are some guidelines to get you started. Many of these can actually be useful at various stages, and in different ways.

Birth to 9 Months

Give your baby toys that engage sense such as mobiles, rocking toys, chew toys, chunky boards and cloth books.

Use toys that stimulate cause and effect like pop-up toys and busy boxes

9 to 18 Months

Give role play toys that imitate real life like tool set, cook and kitchen toy set, animal farms etc

Toys that demonstrate how things that fit together like puzzles, blocks, and shape sorters

Toys that encourage motor skills such as pull and push toys, and balls

18 to 36 Months

Toys that encourage the child to create like modeling clay, crayons, and finger paints

Toys that improve the use of imagination such as dress-up clothes, action and animals figures, dolls and doll houses, stuffed animals

It is the great desire of every parent to provide the best opportunities for their children. The idea of providing your child with educational toys is typically borne with noblest aspiration. Just remember that it is the parent’s job to judge wisely about how an object can best stimulate his child’s learning and development. Remember that ultimately, it is not the toy itself that makes your child smarter. It is how you encourage him to use his mind and body to solve the problems and develop his own ideas.

Saturnism or lead poisoning is seen where lead is present in blood at high levels. If severe enough it may cause irreversible nervous system damage along with serious toxicity to other body organs and systems. Lead is being by humans for thousand years and is part of various products like paints and toys. Lead if ingested at high levels due to acute or chronic exposure to such products may lead to symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, mood swings, irritability, lack of proper sleep, hyperactivity, headache, and diarrhea and if severe enough may even lead to death.

Children are particularly at risk to any poisoning including lead because of their immature defense system and organs particular important for detoxification like liver. Children if exposed to high levels of lead either through acute ingestion or by chronic exposure like toys containing lead may have spectrum of ill health effects like behavioral problems, cognitive and learning difficulties, and physical disabilities. The toxic dose for children proposed by CDC is about 10 ug/dl, however, the effects of lead below the level of 10 ug/dl is not fully understood but many researchers have proposed that it is equally dangerous to children. The most dangerous aspect of lead poisoning in children is that once lead enters into the their body, it may take even years to get out of the body and thus pose great threats to child’s health during this period. Children of all ages are equally susceptible to deleterious effects of lead poisoning. Though various products high levels of lead like paint have been made to minimize or eliminate the lead content, lead is still being shown in various other products including toys. Toys being imported from China has shown to contain lead are commonly bought in U.S. for children. Though we have not seen mass epidemic or some set of symptoms, but absence of symptoms in these children does not eliminate the over risk of toxicity because hidden symptoms could be as lethal as visible ones. Medical community is still figuring out the possible tests or protocols to find out the ways for diagnosis of lead toxicity if lead content in body is at low levels. Should we negate the problem because we do not see it or we as parents should do something about it and ask the relevant governmental agencies and concerned departments including healthcare regulating bodies to do something about it? Of course not every toys imported from China contains lead but it is important to filter those manufactures producing lead contaminated toys is important so that we can have safe toys for our children to play with.

Toys are a fundamental part of a child’s growing up years. Research shows that toys also are a crucial tool in child therapy. Child psychologists believe that several types of wooden toys, such as dollhouses, sand toys, and other therapeutic products, are able to bring about healing in children. In fact, psychologists go so far as to recommend that children be encouraged to increasingly participate in noncompetitive games.

It is a well-established fact that creative play is necessary for a child’s development. Heidi Britz-Crecelius, a leading child development author, asserts that children engaged in early creative games excel in academics and in all aspects of life. Infants love playing with brightly colored wooden toys, such as rattles, music boxes, etc. These wooden toys encourage sensory stimulation and development. They gradually learn to recognize and reach for their favorite toys and play with them. These activities help in refining their eye-hand coordination and visual and perceptual skills.

Most toddlers love to ride on an animal rocker. It is interesting to note that such rockers also help a child in establishing control over head, trunk, arms and legs. They also learn to maintain balance, adjust and adapt to changes in movement.

Since these toys are wooden and non-toxic, parents need not worry about their inquisitive kids putting it in their mouth. The kind of wooden toys that parents select for their children depend on the child’s tastes and interests. The games that are bound to benefit kids include physical, logical, musical, spatial play, beginning in solo play and eventually team play.

There are several toys that are known to specifically help children with autism. These toys help improve language development, build strength, body control, coordination, motor and sensory regulation. These wooden toys encourage children to play more and learn more. Some useful autistic toys include the Wheeley Bug, Cutter Set, Picnic Set, Large Rocking Horse and Puzzles, among others.

Wooden blocks are yet another way of developing a child’s imagination and creativity. A child uses different blocks to give shape to ideas. These are just the appropriate playthings for preschoolers. Blocks also help in language development. When a child uses these blocks to pretend play, it is actually enriching his language skills.

Children who play with blocks as a team are able to develop their social skills as well. Working together gives them the opportunity to enhance their communication and leadership skills. Thus, block building paves the path for social, emotional and language development. It also develops and enriches arithmetic and mathematical skills.

Playing with shapes makes him aware of the basic shapes and their uses. The process of construction itself goes a long way in strengthening eye-hand coordination, creativity and role play.

Thus, wooden toys are the perfect answer to a child’s balanced development. Bright, superior quality wooden toys are an essential part of childhood that has the power to lead to a child’s holistic development.
